Our History

The Chalet was built between 1985 and 1989, in the authentically Swiss/Suisse style, while we were still operating our Boutique Jeaneries “Denim & Spice” in the main street of Cronulla and “Maxl’s Boutique” in the Westfield Shopping town in Hurstville.

After selling our shops and our expanded 4-bedroom little “Alpen Chalet” in Bonnett Bay, Sutherland, to a newly married couple, we moved and made our home here, up on Hero’s Hill, Surf Beach/Malua Bay, Batemans Bay. It is still on the unspoilt Nature Coast of NSW.

We, herewith, wish to share our dreams come true, with you. If it is of interest to you, read on.

Herbert, a Bavarian from Rosenheim had worked for Nestle’ in Switzerland. Seeking adventure and a change, he took the opportunity to work for Nestle’ in Cape Town, South Africa.

We met the day after he arrived in Cape Town, and went dancing with friends, in the Beer Garten of the Kings Hotel in Seapoint (my mother met my father while dancing at the Seapoint Pavilion on the Pier.)

Amazing how destiny works – for us that was just over 50 years ago!… Three years later we had our engagement in South Africa and 7 months later we married on the borders of Switzerland and Germany in Weil am Rhein, a small village town.

With a cold winter and much shoveling of snow, it was time to migrate to our dream destination – Australia, land of sunshine, warmth, beauty and opportunity. We fell in love with our city of Sydney and the botanical gardens.

As a Food technologist and Chemical engineer, Herbert had the pick of 6 positions. How lucky was that!

By the time he received his first week’s wages, we had $5 between us and a baby on the way.   Providence prevailed and to cut a long story short, we thrived.

Casually helping friends with their businesses, I was encouraged to set up my dream of owning a Gifts & Clothing shop.

The hobby became a lucrative 15 year business in Cronulla and in Westfield, Hurstville.

Yes, it was fun but also so fast paced that we needed “time-out”, but couldn’t find the right place and environment to unwind. And going to Julianna’s Disco at the Hilton wasn’t exactly time out or relaxing. We were still operating in automated overdrive – you know what I mean???

Then, remembering, having heard of Batemans Bay in our very early Australian days, we visited the then coastal fishing village – and fell in love with the un-spoilt beauty and natural environment.

Then, one Thursday evening after late night shopping, I was wrapping potato peelings in the classifieds section of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

My eyes fell on an advertisement, as I wrapped – BATEMANS BAY – 100 Acres for Sale. A place to keep our children’s horses, was a good excuse, and we could build the Swiss Chalet which I always wanted.

Besides, it gave me butterflies – my whole body tingled. I had to have it! The ever changing view to Mount Wandera in differing moods was captivating and still is. The views over the Tasman Sea to the Tolgate Islands and across the bay towards Long Beach and Maloney’s beach, serenely beautiful.

The energy was right and strong. Just what we needed to relax and unwind. So with the love of my life, my agreeable husband, who is my pillar of strength and my best friend, my next dream was realised. Herbert drew up the house plans, supervised construction and created what we now have to share with you. Welcome to our little piece of Paradise.

I suppose we should be retired by now, but, we love welcoming you to Chalet Swisse Spa Retreat, still after 27 years since welcoming our very first Festive Season guests on 28th December, 1989…
